Name: Sudeshni Singh
NZTC Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing - Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)
What motivated you to pursue a career as a Healthcare Assistant?
In Indian cultures it is common to live with your whole family and I really enjoyed looking after my grandparents. I wanted to help them and support them to make their last days happy ones. This is when I first discovered that I like working with older people and providing the best possible care.
What do you enjoy most about being a Healthcare Assistant?
I like chatting with residents and asking them about their lives. I have learnt a lot about their upbringing, their grandchildren and their views on what’s going on in the news and how it was different when they were younger.
What care philosophies have you developed within your career already and which aspects do you want to develop further?
The most important thing for me when caring for someone is respecting their choices – what they want to wear, what they want to eat, and how they want me to care for them.
I am used to Indian cultures but I want to develop a better multicultural understanding. I also want to understand the older generation more and how I can help them.
What were you doing before studying with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) and did that have any influence on choosing to study a health and wellbeing qualification?
I wanted to upskill with NZTC because I saw it as a good opportunity to gain more experience and knowledge in my current role as a Healthcare Assistant in a rest home and retirement village.
What are your plans once you graduate?
I want to continue work in this field as a Healthcare Assistant. When you see the residents you will think of yourself – one day you are going to be in their position and you will want to be cared for well. I care for the residents as if they were my grandparents.
